Cleavers, an herb also known as Galium aparine, is an herbaceous annual in the bedstraw (coffee) family that is also known by a variety of other common names that describe its growth habit, such as Sticky Willy, Catch Weed and Grip Grass. In fact, the plant is considered an invasive weed by many gardeners because it tends to “run over” its neighbors by latching onto their stems with hooks and eventually climbing over their tops.

Cleavers has several potential health benefits. It's known for its diuretic properties, helping to flush out excess fluids from the body and potentially aiding in the detoxification process. Cleavers can be used to support the lymphatic system, which plays a role in immune function and overall well-being. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory effects and can be used topically to soothe skin irritations and minor wounds.

Contraindications for cleavers are relatively limited. However, individuals with a history of kidney stones or urinary tract issues should exercise caution, as its diuretic effect could exacerbate these conditions. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice, especially if you have specific health concerns or are taking medications.
