Lemon balm or Melissa officionalis is a member of the mint family that grows abundantly in southern Europe, Central Asia and North Africa. It is also cultivated in kitchen herb gardens throughout North America.
Also known as sweet balm and Melissa, lemon balm has a long history of use for its soothing and calming properties and was/is incorporated into teas and remedies to relieve stress, anxiety, and aid in better sleep. It was also applied topically to alleviate skin irritations and minor discomforts, harnessing its natural healing qualities.
